Many prominent black leaders thought Malcolm X’s influence would quickly and quietly disappear” after his death [1], but clearly that is not the case. In 1992, filmmaker Spike Lee produced the movie Malcolm X which won numerous awards and was nominated for many others even 27 years after his death. [2] Even current President Barack Obama admits that he has been influenced by Malcolm X. In his memoir, Dreams of My Father, Obama says “His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me; the blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will.” [3] Malcolm X still empowers people today to do things they thought they would never accomplish. As Malcolm X said, “Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man you take it.” [4] Malcolm X showed us that anything is possible with drive and commitment.
